NLGJA Student Project

Last month I had the opportunity to teach video at the NLGJA student project in San Francisco. The students spent a week working with professional journalists, learning to shoot video and photos, record and produce audio and write stories. Students were on a tight deadline, posting to the web by c.o.b. each day. I had a lot of fun working with the students and am happy I got to be a part of it. I hope you check out their work!

Harper's Ferry, West Virginia

I realize that this blog is starting to turn into the "Rossman on vacation" blog. I haven't been shooting at work lately, but am hoping by the end of the summer I will be back on assignment. This weekend we went for a 3 day camping/ tubing/ white water rafting trip to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. The rapids were sub-par, but the rest of the trip was fantastic.

I was fortunate enough to help some friends shoot an entry for the 48 hour film festival, and it was a blast! They wrote a really clever script, kept things organized and in the end I think it turned out really well. In case you're not familiar with the fest, you literally get 48 hours to make a movie. They give you a genre, a line and some character names and away you go!

Start: Palo Duro Canyon (Near Amarillo, T.X.)

On our way to Cochiti Lake, we stopped at the Cadillac Graveyard in Amarillo.

As we drove into New Mexico we could see a storm forming ahead of us, it was unreal. It wasn't raining on us, but what looked like a close distance must have been miles away.

Our camping site was essentially on the edge of this bluff overlooking Tetilla Lake. We set up our tent and decided to book it to the hot springs. The GPS sent us up this dirt road, which seemed okay at first. After we started driving downhill, we realized there was no way to turn around. We had 15 miles to go.

The car was bucking like a bronco. We could hear screeching as the bottom scraped against the rocky path. At one point I thought something fell off. I still don't know how we made it.

The upside of this was the best views we would see on our trip. I wish I could've enjoyed them more, but I was too freaked out. The sun was going down and there was no way we could make it out in the dark.

Longest day of driving yet. I think we were in the car for almost 11 hours, and felt like we weren't getting anywhere. But once we got off of I-40 and entered the national park, we were in awe. This is where the trip went from cool to amazing.

We decided to set up our tent as quickly as possible and get in a hike before it got completely dark out. This was also the first night we decided to cook, another rookie mistake. I think I ate more bugs then soup.

We wanted to stargaze, but were too tired to stay up. Luckily, I woke up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, I think around 3AM, and I got to see the Milky Way.

Julie found directions that took us along the gulf coast. And then it began to storm, and we decided to stick our feet in the Ocean despite the rain. My lens fogged up instantly.

And then, the road stopped. No bridge. We had to take a ferry to the other side, but we survived.

Once we hit Texas, the humidity dropped and the temperature soared into the 100s. Stephen took us to Chuy's for dinner, where I ate the best burrito of my life. Then out to Barton Creek Saloon to play deer hunt and drink Lone Star's. Amazing.

We left New Orleans in the early afternoon a bit, well, dehydrated. We drove through the Garden District, checking out all the southern mansions before hitting the road to the middle of nowhere. When planning the trip, we'd decided Julie, the experienced camper, would book all the campsites, and I would book all the hotels.

As we stepped out of the "silver bullet" (we'd named the Grand Prix that afternoon) and into the pouring rain, I lost all faith in Julie's expertise. We were literally camping on a piece of dry land in a swamp in the middle of nowhere Louisiana. Surveying our neighbors, I noticed a large tent with a gaiping hole in it and a golden retriever tied to a picnic table. And that was it. No one else in sight. I was creeped out and it wasn't even dark outside.

We decided to set up the tent in the rain and head to the movies. When we returned, it was pitch black. After working the combination to open the gate, slowing crawling through the site, not seeing any signs of anyone else, we got ready for bed. It had stopped raining, but our tent hadn't dried out. I was convinced we'd be eaten by an alligator in the middle of the night. Between the puddle in the bottom of our tent and the high humidity, I'm still not sure how I managed to fall asleep, but I did.

When I woke up the next morning, I couldn't tell if I was wet because I had slept in water or because I had sweat through my clothes. I called Stephen to let him know we were on our way to Austin. "We're really gross, there aren't any showers here," I felt the need to warn him.

We all have moments when we realize we've witnessed change in our lifetime. My first came this January, shooting video on the national mall for President Obama's inauguration celebration. I felt more united with Americans than I ever had that day. We had done it, we had successfully elected a black man president of the United States. People who didn't know each other were holding hands, tears of joy streaming down faces of all colors.

And there are times we are reminded of the hatred and segregation our country has faced, the fight for civil rights. Julie and I were reminded of that fight as we went to the Civil Rights Museum and site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination.

After the Civil Rights museum, we headed south into the swamp land of Louisiana.

And, of course, we went out on Bourbon Street.
